The University of B.C. and the Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club have formalized a joint initiative to construct and operate a shared use soccer training facility at UBC. Alongside the UBC Varsity Soccer and Whitecaps Football Club, the new facility will also provide for many community and recreational organizations.
The facility will form the centerpiece of the proposed National Soccer Development Centre (NSDC), which includes:
- New field house,
- Two grass playing fields,
- An artificial turf field,
- Relocation of the existing Varsity turf field and Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre.
Capital funding for the facility is split between the Provincial Government ($11.6 million), the Whitecaps ($8.789 million) and UBC Properties Trust for a total project value of $22 million.
(NSDC) features a state-of-the-art 3 story, 38,000 square foot facility. The fieldhouse is a high-performing green building and is undergoing LEED Gold Certification in regards to sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environment quality.
The goal was to save on energy costs and reduce carbon emissions, as well as providing optimum air quality and innovation in energy efficiency. HVAC Systems and Solutions provided large packaged dx rooftop units providing gas heating and dx cooling to the facility. A dedicated MESTEK – Make Up Air Unit was used to bring fresh air to the kitchen area. DECTRON – leading the HVAC indoor pools market provides comfort and cooling for the hydrotherapy pool area.
